Weekend Preview Dec. 5-7: U15 Canadian Crown, Girls USA-Canada Cup and Spirit of Duluth

The weekend of Dec. 5-7 brings with it an abundance of high-level tournaments all over the continent. Unfortunately, we can’t cover them all, but as always it is our goal to report on the action from a variety of great events for boys and girls at different age levels.

Starting this weekend and continuing through the winter holidays, some of the top tournaments of the year will be taking place.

A number of Canada’s top U15 AAA Boys teams are in Devon, Alberta Dec. 4-7, competing along with top 14U USA Boys Tier 1 programs in the U15 Elite Canadian Crown. This annual event features a dozen highly ranked teams from Western Canada, Ontario and the U.S. placed in three pools and competing for four days. The tournament includes Shattuck-St. Mary’s, the No. 1 USA Boys 14U Tier 1 team according to the MHR Week 11 Rankings, as well as the fifth-ranked Bishop Kearney Selects and Western Canada’s Nos. 2, 5, 6 and 8 U15 teams.

Heading eastward into Ontario, the Waterloo Ravens are hosting the Girls USA-Canada Cup Dec. 5-7.

The USA-Canada Cup is a prestigious, invitation-only annual tournament that is run by the Waterloo Girls Hockey Association with the intention of bringing together top USA 16U, Canadian U18, USA 19U and Canadian U22/junior teams to compete in a showcase format. All teams are guaranteed 5 games.

There are 80 teams competing in this year’s USA-Canada Cup, with some traveling all the way from Western Canada, the Canadian Maritimes, Maryland and Pennsylvania. The U22/19U and U18/16U divisions each have 40 teams split into four 10-team pools.

Moving south and crossing the border, many of the top teams in the MHR Week 11 Minn-Kota Boys Bantam and Peewee AA rankings are participating in the 49th Spirit of Duluth Tournament. A total of 34 Bantam andwee teams are in Duluth for the weekend, with games running Dec. 5-7. The Spirit of Duluth also offers Squirt A and Junior Gold A divisions, but our focus is on the Bantams and Peewees.

U15 Elite Canadian Crown

The U15 Elite Canadian Crown has returned to Devon Alberta and is being played Dec. 4-7, bringing together some of the top U15 Boys programs from across Canada and highly ranked 14U United States teams for four days of high-level hockey.

The tournament is being hosted by the Northern Alberta Xtreme, with games being played at the Zender and Fisher Arenas. Every competing team is either ranked among the MHR Week 11 Western Canada U15 AAA Boys top 16, the USA Week 11 14U Tier 1 top 35 or Ontario’s U15 AAA top 19.

Of the 12 competing teams, six are ranked among the top 10 in their respective category, including Shattuck-St. Mary’s, the USA’s top-ranked 14U team.

This year’s field includes a strong mix of Canadian and American talent, with teams representing Alberta, Ontario, California, Minnesota, New York, and Illinois. The 12 teams are divided into three four-team pools for round-robin play, with playoff rounds and consolation games set for Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6 and 7.
